Copper Canyon

The views from the train on the Copper Canyon tour are spectacular. There are places between cars where it is open and you can take pictures. Holland America’s Copper Canyon excursion from Topolobampo is 18 hours . . . a LONG day . . . but it would take at least a week to do it on your own. I’ve always wanted to see the Copper Canyon and this was a great opportunity to do so. It’s called the Copper Canyon not because of any copper deposits, but because of the copper color of the canyon walls. Many elected to remain onboard the VOLENDAM, but there really isn’t much to see and do in Topolobampo other than to work on pronouncing the name fluently.

Actually, there are copper mines in Copper Canyon. We have been leading tours into the canyon for over twenty years and have hiked down to several of the old mines at the bottom of the canyon and brought back samples of rich copper ore. Just last month, Trelawney Resources Inc., a Canadian mining company, reported assaying high grade copper/silver ore in the Copper Canyon area of La Bufa, where one historical mine produced over one million tons of copper/silver ore.
Thanks, Lee, for the clarification! They told us it was the copper color, but frankly it didn’t look all that much like copper to me. It makes more sense that there were/are copper mines in the area!
